Travelogue: Winter/Spring 2016

There is a lot of talk these days about mindfulness and being present- plein air painting is inherently the practice of both. First, the act of painting alla prima on location demands focused concentration, a state of mindfulness, in order to take in and process the ‘real time’ visual information and sensory stimuli of a place. Second, the act of communicating that experience visually demands staying in a state of heightened awareness for as long as it takes to translate and distill that information via paint to canvas. Plein air painting is my personal reaction to what I am observing. Whether this produces a sketch/study or a more complete painting, each canvas documents that experience.
